A Conversation on Learning
7:00pm Local Time (plus pre- and post-workshop activities)
This is a two-hour active workshop/conversation, designed to help you--students, parents, and others--to take charge of your own learning. We start by having you identify the most significant learning experiences from your own life, then use those build a set of lessons for learning: those elements and conditions that are really needed for learning to occur. We then discuss the skills you believe will make a difference for students to succeed in the 21st Century, and we brainstorm a framework of strategies for developing those skills and achieving long term educational goals for you and/or your children. The group will at this point have built a larger set of goals and strategies for learning, and you will choose the ones that are most applicable and important to you to take away as your own personal learning plan: a framework set of principles to guide your educational activities and decisions.
The first goal of this workshop is to help you begin to understand the importance of taking control of your own learning goals and to shift your relationship to the education system. Whether you want to just make sure you are in charge of your educational decisions, or you're struggling with feeling or being told that you or your child is a failure, my hope is that you leave the workshop with a much clearer sense of direction and independence.
The second goal of this workshop is to model how you might hold a local or community discussion about education. Those who want to can stay for a 30-minute session after the workshop to discuss steps you could take to hold your own "conversations on learning."
Other:
PRE-WORKSHOP ACTIVITIES:
5:00 pm local time - If this event is held on a Friday Night, we will start at 5pm local time with a live recording of weekly podcast with Audrey Watters of Hack Education. Mostly this will involve bringing Audrey in remotely, but in some of the cities she may be able to join us. The podcast is a somewhat snarky, hopefully independent review of education and educational-technology stories of the week and of Audrey's blog posts.
6:00 pm local time - Picnic / brown-bag dinner with anyone who would like to join us.
POST-WORKSHOP ACTIVITY:
9:00 - 9:30pm local time - An open discussion on how to take this workshop format and hold a discussion in your local neighborhood or within your community on education and learning.
